The number beside it indicates the level of hardness or softness of the lead. So for example, a 2F pencil will be softer than a 3F pencil while a 3B will be softer than a 2B. If you want to draw sketch lines which can be erased easily, use an F pencil. If you want darker and heavier lines which are almost charcoal-like in consistency, use a B pencil with a higher number. You can even smudge lines drawn with a B pencil with your finger!

Just like pencils, you can draw on almost any kind of paper, but if you really want to get the results that you envision, you have to choose the right kind of paper. High quality drawing paper is tough and should not tear after a couple of erasures. Drawing paper also comes in various textures. Paper with a lot of “tooth” will abrade the pencil more easily, which is also why you need to know which kind of pencil will work best on what kind of paper. Of course, this will depend on what kind of drawing you are planning to make.

Erasers. You should have a good eraser when doing pencil art. Erasers aren’t just used to erase mistakes, these are also used to “mop up” dark spots in order to create a good definition between light and shade. Don’t use just any eraser, especially those which are found on the ends of regular pencils because those are quite hard and will scratch the paper heavily. You should always have a kneadable eraser at hand, these are not for heavy erasing but rather for mopping up smudges and dirt. This won’t tear the paper at al.
